When I first acquired Dempsey & Carroll, I did not have a clear plan. I most certainly did not have a playbook, or a perfectly mapped-out strategy for what the next few years would look like.
What I did have was a business with a long history, real potential, and a lot of uncertainty.
I remember sitting with that reality more than once, asking myself not just what comes next, but how do we even begin to rebuild this in a meaningful way?
There’s a version of building a business that looks very clean from the outside.
The idea.
The launch.
The growth.
The success.
And then there’s the reality.
The reality is that most businesses are built in layers, some intentional, some reactive.
There are moments where things feel like they are working, and just as many where they very clearly are not.
I’ve spent most of my career somewhere in between those two states.
Rebuilding is not a single moment, it’s a series of decisions made over time. Some are right. Some are not. And most require you to move forward without full certainty.
There were moments when growth came quickly, and others when progress felt slow and hard-earned. There were decisions that looked right on paper but didn’t play out in reality. And there were also moments where instinct mattered more than strategy.
What I’ve learned is that building a business is not about getting everything right, it’s about staying in it long enough to figure out what works.
Resilience is not a dramatic quality. It’s much quieter than that. It’s showing up every day, continuing to make decisions, and being willing to adjust when something isn’t working.
The businesses that last are not the ones that avoid challenges.
They are the ones that move through them.
And often, the rebuilding is where the real growth happens.
More to come, Lauren
