Handwritten notes matter more now than ever.

Every time I meet someone new, the first question they ask is: Does anyone write notes anymore? Absolutely! Handwritten notes matter more now than ever because they are less ubiquitous, they are immediately more special.

If you want to stand out after a job interview, do two things. First, send a follow up email to the interviewer with additional thoughts and questions as well as appreciation for their time. An immediate response demonstrates your follow-through and commitment to the job.

Second, when you get home, write a short note that picks up a personal thread from your meeting – I noticed that you had a mini red sox helmet on your desk – I love baseball! I saw the artist set of colored pencils on your shelf – I love sketching to clear my mind while I’m trying to tackle a tricky problem. Circling back with a personal, handwritten note will instantly elevate your candidacy.

Just had a big meeting pitching new business? Follow the same playbook – email followed by a nice note.

Same goes for any gifts you receive. If you don’t think you can send a note within a week, which is totally okay, then send a gracious email immediately. The note which you will send either way, should show gratitude for the gift:

- I’ve always coveted these argyle socks, where did you find them?

- I can’t wait to use this all-in-one spoon, fork, knife utensil on my next camping trip!

- I never would have purchased this hot-pink furry robe for myself – it fits perfectly!

My favorite reason to send a note is to thank a friend or host for an event:

– Dinner at your house last weekend was such a treat. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard.

– I loved going to the basketball game with you on Friday. I had forgotten how much fun it is to watch in person.

– I’m glad you could join me for the walk in the park last Tuesday. It felt so good to get sun and fresh air in the middle of a workday.

If I think about it – there is almost never a reason not to send a note. It makes me smile while I’m writing it and makes the recipient smile when they receive it. Kind of an easy win in times when there are so few wins.

You should try it! Think of one person who made you happy this week or one person you haven’t seen in a while and send them a note – just because.
