Leadership is a process

There are moments as a leader that no one really prepares you for.

Not the big, visible ones, but the quieter ones. The decisions that don’t have a clear answer. The conversations you know you need to have, even if they’re difficult. The responsibility of moving something forward when you’re not entirely sure what the outcome will be.

I’ve had many of those moments over the years.

And what I’ve learned is that leadership is much less about having certainty, and much more about being willing to make thoughtful decisions without it.

There is a level of uncertainty that comes with running a business that never fully goes away. You can gather information, you can seek advice, but ultimately, there are moments where you have to rely on your own judgment.

And judgment is something you build over time.

It comes from experience.

Most of the valuable lessons I’ve learned came from decisions that didn’t go the way I expected. Those moments are almost never easy, but they are the ones I learned the most from.

Leadership also requires perspective.

Not every challenge is as urgent as it feels in the moment. Not every decision is permanent. And not every setback defines the outcome.  The ability to step back, reassess, and move forward is one of the most important parts of leading anything over time.

There is no perfect way to lead. There is only the willingness to stay engaged, to learn, and to continue making thoughtful decisions as you go.

More to come, Lauren
