The Power of Thoughtful Collaborations – at Dempsey & Carroll
Collaborations have been an integral part of the Dempsey & Carroll playbook for almost 20 years. In 2008, as we built out our retail space and prepared to create a physical homage to the beauty and joy of the handwritten note, we chose to lead with a three-part collaboration. Rather than going out with press releases about our new flagship shop, we led with three timeless collaborations, each coming with a different perspective and each showcasing a different attribute of our craftsmanship in ways that had not been done before.
1. Bronson van Wyck – one of the world's most celebrated luxury event planners, he is also a bestselling author of Born to Party, Forced to Work. His design featured an intricately engraved snake rendered in metallic blue green ink.
2. Celerie Kemble – an accomplished interior designer and author, she also designs fabrics, rugs, furniture, lighting and more. Her design featured a long and narrow card with a red bamboo engraved border creating a frame for the writer.
3. Lela Rose- a New York City-based designer widely regarded for her elegant aesthetic and fresh point of view, she is noted for designing the dresses Jenna and Barbara Bush wore to their father’s inauguration. Her design featured oversized spools of thread engraved in the lower right corner of a petite card.
Rather than telling the story of what we were doing internally, we decided to show how talented creatives imagined our brand in their worlds. We used the opening of the shop as a way to showcase these distinct new designs alongside our traditional products. These collaborations were the headline and the announcement of our new shop was secondary.
The success of these first partnerships led us to the intentional strategy of releasing collaborations on a regular schedule over the next 18 years.
A New Lens on Tradition
Each partnership allows us to reinterpret what we do from a different perspective,
Each partnership is an opportunity—to learn, to evolve, and to create something memorable.
I’ve come to appreciate that the most meaningful collaborations are not transactional, they are creative partnerships rooted in shared values, complementary perspectives, and a genuine desire to create something beautiful together.
A great collaboration is never just about exposure. It’s about bringing together two distinct audiences, two points of view, and creating something neither brand could achieve alone.
When Heritage Meets Heritage
There is something especially powerful when two legacy brands come together.
Our collaboration with Schumacher is a perfect example. Pairing their iconic Chiang Mai Dragon pattern, with our archival engraving die and craftsmanship, together we created something that felt both familiar and entirely new.
When heritage brands collaborate successfully, they don’t dilute one another, they reinforce each other.
Art, Emotion and Fashion
Collaborations bring fresh energy. With Hunt Slonem, stationery became a form of functional art, playful, collectible, and expressive.
With Jonathan Cohen, fashion met paper in a way that felt vibrant and immediate. His botanical prints translated beautifully into a medium that is, at its heart, about personal expression.
These partnerships bring new energy to something traditional. They invite a different audience to engage. And they remind us that even the most classic objects can evolve.
Some collaborations tap into something even deeper—memory.
Working with Warm & Wonderful and their iconic Black Sheep pattern first made famous on a sweater worn by Princess Diana, brought an immediate emotional connection. It’s a symbol that carries decades of recognition, but when translated into fine stationery, it became something fresh again.
Nostalgia, when used thoughtfully, is incredibly powerful.
Gracious Living
Our latest collaboration with Daphne Oz, isn’t just about introducing stationery to a new audience. It is about aligning with someone who embodies a way of living—where beauty exists in the everyday, where entertaining is thoughtful, and where personal details matter.
This collaboration tells a story about modern living, family traditions, and the small rituals that elevate daily life. And it fully embraces our brand pillar of facilitating gracious living.
Collaborations have been an integral part of our strategy for so many reasons! They give us and our partners….
· A way to reach new audiences—authentically
· A chance to refresh perception without losing identity
· A reason for conversation— in person, in press and on social
· A sense of scarcity and excitement through limited editions
· A deeper cultural relevance
· And, perhaps most importantly, a richer story to tell
Follow along for more about our collaborations over the years. How they were created. What made some more successful than others. And which we loved just because they were fun and beautiful. More to come…
